Donald R. Metz "Donny", 83, of Tilden Twp., died Friday, December 9, 2016 in his residence. He was the husband of Josephine S. (Strause) Metz, died June 7, 2005.
Born in Hamburg, he was the son of the late George F. and Mae N. (Potteiger) Metz. He was member of St. Michael's Church, Tilden Twp. Donny graduated from Hamburg High School in 1950. He was self-employed as president/owner & operator of Randall R. Rentschler, Inc., Hamburg from 1976-1996 and had worked there since 1950. Donny was a member of the former Greater Hamburg Business Association, Million Dollar Club of National Plumbing Stores, and Life member of Shartlesville Fish and Game Association. He served for many years as property chairman of St. Michael's, was a former church councilman for 8 years, Church Choir Member since 1950, and was chairman of the first Sunday School Building Project. He was a well-known fast pitch softball player for 38 years, organized the Blue Mountain Softball League in 1949, and was a founding member and life member of the Little Antlers Hunting Club, Lycoming County, where he also served as a former president and secretary. Donny was a member of Union Fire Co. No. 1 of Hamburg, and the Shartlesville Fire Company. Donny enjoyed woodworking, loved to travel, and enjoyed watching the Phillies and the Eagles. He always loved to play golf with his high school buddy, Mel Wagner.
Donald is survived by a son: Dennis R. husband of Eileen K. (Wagner) Metz, Upper Tulpehocken Twp.; two daughters: Karen L. (Metz) wife of Paul J. Bender, Bel Air, MD, and Lisa A. (Metz) wife of Rodney J. Rodgers, Lake Wynonah. He is also survived by six grandchildren: Troy husband of Kelly Metz, Eric husband of Amy Metz, Cory Bender, Laura Bender fiance of Kyle Hoffman, Shana Rodgers, and Zachary Rodgers; and three great-grandchildren: Jameson, Elise, and Kendyl Metz. Donald was predeceased by his friend, Fay L. Morgan.
Services will be held Tuesday, December 13, 2016 at 2:00 pm from St. Michael's Church, 529 St. Michael's Rd., Hamburg, PA 19526. Burial will follow in St. Michael's Cemetery. A viewing will be held from 12:00 to 2:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to St. Michael's Church at the above address.
