Obituary for Samuel E. Stewart

Samuel E. Stewart, 89, of Hamburg, passed away on Monday, November 23, 2015 in his residence. He was the husband of Shirley C. (Becker) Stewart, who died September 6, 2012.
Born in Newburg, Lehigh Co., he was the son of the late Charles T. and Mabel E. (Kohler) Stewart. He was a U.S. Marine Corp veteran of World War II. Samuel was a self-employed insurance salesman and security broker for fifty years until his retirement. He was a member and former council member of Zion's Lutheran Church, Perry Twp. Samuel was a charter member of Ronald Reagan's Republican Presidential Task Force; a permanent member in the National Republican Senatorial Committee; and a member of the American Security Council from 1984 to 1989. He was a life member of the National Rifle Association; Shartlesville Fish and Game Association; Hamburg Game Association; National Travel Club; Encore Travel Club; Amvets; Trans World Airlines Ambassador Club; and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. Samuel was also a member of Vaux Lodge #406 F. & A.M., Hamburg; and Scottish Rite Consistory, Reading. He enjoyed hunting and fishing.
Samuel is survived by one daughter: Karen S. (Stewart), wife of Larry Knouse, Exeter Twp.; seven grandchildren: Stephanie D., wife of Steven Schumaker; Jenni R., wife of Scott Hill; Ryan M. Kutz; Bradley J. Stewart; Allison L., wife of James Hancik; Samantha J., wife of Ralph Morales; and Kristyn M. Stewart; and six great- grandchildren: Katelyn and Kyle Schumaker; Evan and Nathan Karasek; and Talula and Bodhi Hancik. He is also survived by five sisters: Lillian M., wife of Michael Hopko, Orwigsburg; Margaret M., widow of Charles Donne, Tilden Twp.; Mabel M., widow of Donald Stoudt, Tilden Twp.; Marietta J., widow of Kenneth Himmelberger; and Martha E., wife of Richard Kohler, Reading; his daughter-in-law: Jean M. (Lehman) Good, Hamburg; and his former son-in-law: John Kutz, Myerstown. Samuel was predeceased by a son: Gerald R. Stewart, who died December 20, 1988; a daughter: Bonnie S. (Stewart) Shirley, who died June 23, 2014; and a grandson: Jereme B. Zerbe.
Services will be held on Wednesday at 11:00 am from Leibensperger Funeral Homes, Inc., 65 S. 4th Street, Hamburg (off street parking in rear). Burial will follow in St. Paul's (Smoke) Cemetery, Windsor Twp. A viewing will be held in the funeral home Wednesday 9:30 to 10:45 am. Vaux Masonic Services will be held at 10:45 am.
